Subway Station: Scene of Autrey's Heroism(AP Photo by Nick Brooks)

While I was sleeping, there’s been news around the place about this “Subway Hero”. About Wesley Autrey and his heroism that saved a young 19-year-old man from certain death. The heroic incident occurred Tuesday at around 12:45 pm.

So, here’s how the scenario played out.

Wesley Autrey is with his two daughters who are 4 and 6 years old, he sees a young man, Cameron Hollopter, having an apparent siezure and fall into the railway tracks below. Autrey jumps onto the railway tracks to save Hollopter from an oncoming subway train. Autrey tries to pick the young man up, but seeing the lights of the subway train coming fast, he jumps on top of Hollopter and he rolls both of them together in between the tracks. The train puts the brakes on, some train cars pass over the top of Hollopter and Autrey, but they come out unharmed.

Let’s pause for some dramatic effects and musical ensemble…

Isn’t that one of the most amazing stories you’ve ever heard?! This is such an amazing story, that two days after the fact, news outlets are writing about his heroism, talk shows have him booked, and I think even David Letterman has him on schedule. One neat caveat about this story is that, after the event, Autrey refuses medical attention and goes to work. He’s a really humble man, heroic, unselfish…

In these times of political turmoil, negative world events, I think we desperately need more heroes of Autrey’s demeanor. Quick to put others first, yet willing to shrug all the accolades aside, knowing that doing the right thing is not a simple option but a must.
